| IN HARMONY WITH NATURE In 1973, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada asked the residents of Bhaktivedanta Manor to work toward the goal of becoming self- reliant and to grow their own food. The produce currently grown represents a mere fraction of the total food needed by the temple and its visitors. We are constantly trying to adapt our growing approach to the outer-London setting and to keep it relevant. Despite the problems of the costs of self-grown food, we remain committed to the principle of home-grown and will continue to develop self-reliance as far as possible. Currently the temple is 25% self-supporting in garland flowers, 10% in vase flowers, 50% in fresh milk and perhaps only 1% in vegetable growing. Whilst the current land holding could mean a greater quantity of home grown, we may have to see a little more time pass before we can actually manifest a horticultural system that comes near to the ideal. Throughout the 60 acres of paddocks there are hundreds of metres of new hedges to plant and eventually lay. We want to create green barriers between all the pastures and production fields so that the animals and the land they protect can be controlled easily and safely. Over the past 5 years the Temple has planted over 2000 metres of hedges as well as thousands of trees and shrubs. In the near future we are planning to open about 3 acres of grassland and make it a vegetable growing area to address the imbalance in this area.
