Govardhana Puja/ Go Puja/ Annakuta 10th November 2007 Usually the day after Diwali is the Hindu New Year's Day, or 'Ram Raj' - the day that Lord Rama became king of the world. But Govardhana Puja, Go-Puja and Annakuta are all connected with the story of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhana Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan from torrential rains sent by Indra. On this day devotees build with sweets a replica of the hill, which they then circumambulate. The cow is worshipped, being dear to Lord Krishna. Large quantities of prasad are made by devotees and offered on the altar and then distributed to everyone. Hence the name 'Annakuta': Anna meaning 'made from grains'.
