When the Hindu community was establishing itself in Britain during the 1970s, many wondered if there would ever be places for worship, weddings, ceremonies and culture. It seemed so hard to follow one's own religious beliefs in a country with such different practices.
In Britain, 3.38 million cows and bulls are killed every year. Nearly all young bulls die before they reach their third birthday. They are treated terribly during their short lives and are then mercilessly slaughtered - often dying in horrible pain.
New Gokul will:
There are now 33 animals in total at the temple. But we now own over 60 acres of pastures. Many British farms don't provide very much land for their cattle, but ISKCON likes to have one acre for every cow and bull - so we plan to increase the herd to 60 animals. This would provide the basic amount of milk that the temple needs of the seva and puja of the Deities.
The cows need an excellent dairy and milking parlour with pens close by for the calves who suckle their mothers dry after the milking.
The cows and bulls need much larger pens as the current goshalla is too small and cramped.
The bulls need their own Ox Power House with a permanent treadmill and machinery.
The new facilites must allow guests to see all the aspects of a working goshalla, but in a way that is completely safe for the guests and secure for the animals.
