SUMMARY:Disappearance of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur
DESCRIPTION:Wed 25 June 2025\nSrila Bhaktivinoda Thakur (1838-1914) is a prominent preceptor acharya in our succession of spiritual masters and disciples coming from Lord Krishna. He was a pioneering spiritual leader\, a householder\, a magistrate working in colonial India under the British rule\, a prolific preacher\, writer\, and poet. He wrote volumes of books reintroducing the pure teachings of Lord Chaitanya at a time when those teachings had practically become lost. He composed hundreds of devotional songs glorifying Krishna to uplift the consciousness of the suffering people of this world. He corresponded with philosophers\, theologians\, leaders\, scholars\, and professors of his time and sent books\, including The Life and Precepts of Lord Chaitanya\, to university libraries in foreign countries\, planting the seeds for a worldwide movement of Krishna consciousness. It is observed eleven days after the full moon and eleven days after the new moon of every month. Ekadasi is known as the day of Lord Hari and is said to be the mother of devotion. Keeping the fast on Ekadasi is one of the sixty-four items of devotional service listed in Srila Rupa Gosvami’s Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. In fact\, it is one of the first ten. \nThe Nectar of Devotion\, Srila Prabhupada’s summary study of Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu\, states\, “In the Brahma-vaivarta Purana it is said that one who observes fasting on Ekadasi day is freed from all kinds of reactions to sinful activities and advances in pious life. The basic principle is not just to fast\, but to increase one’s faith and love for Govinda\, or Krsna. The real reason for observing fasting on Ekadasi is to minimize the demands of the body and to engage our time in the service of the Lord by chanting or performing similar service. The best thing to do on fasting days is to remember the pastimes of Govinda and to hear His holy name constantly.” \nPandava Nirjala Ekadasi \n“Pandava” refers to the Pandavas\, the sons of Emperor Pandu. One such son was Arjuna\, to whom Krishna spoke the Bhagavad-gita. Another son of Pandu was Bhima\, a most powerful warrior and a most voracious eater. He was not one who welcomed fasting\, and admitted to not being able to follow Ekadasi. However\, he was told that if he observed complete fasting on one particular Ekadasi day annually\, he would get all the spiritual benefits of having followed every Ekadasi fast of the year. After her parents passed away she went to Vrindavan and took shelter of the great devotee Haridas Pandit who accepted her as his disciple. She gave up all of her riches and comforts\, and constantly practiced devotional service with great austerity despite being a princess. \nPleased with her mature devotion\, Haridas Pandit requested her to go to Puri to spread devotional service and remain there. She started speaking on the Bhagavatam and soon became so adored for her narrations that even the King came to listen. DESCRIPTION:Sat 17 May 2025\n\nRamananda Ray was a governor of South India and a great devotee of Krishna. When Lord Chaitanya went on His tour to South India\, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya told Him to meet Ramananda Ray. There the famous conversation took place in which Lord Chaitanya asked Ramananda Ray about the ultimate goal of life. Lord Chaitanya kept on urging him to say something higher\, until finally he came to the understanding of pure love for Krishna. Ramananda Ray later gave up all his responsibilities and joined Lord Chaitanya in Jagannath Puri\, spending many years as one of Lord Chaitanya’s closest associates. He was expert at everything: cooking\, preaching\, Deity worship\, public relations\, sankirtan\, selling incense\, construction\, and everything else it takes to run a temple. He was a tireless worker. He would be the first one up in the morning and the last one to sleep at night. It was Jayananda who was always running out to get the flowers\, Jayananda who was washing dishes and making sure the kitchen was clean\, Jayananda who was often missing class while he was out doing some service\, and Jayananda who was always encouraging others to go out and preach\, and setting the example himself. \nWhatever assignment he was given\, he would always get done\, even if he had to suffer personally for it.
