Relating to our near and dear ones

Relating to our near and dear ones

By Visakha Dasi | from the 12-part ‘Nurturing bhakti through loving exchanges’ series

Building positive relationships isn’t easy, but the results are significant. Strong relationships bring us happiness and improve our physical and mental health. Part of creating such relationships is to give others the space to be themselves and to do things their way. Krishna Himself acknowledges that every living entity has independence when He tells Arjuna, “Deliberate on this fully and then do what you wish to do.” (Gita 18.63) Every living being has a little inherent freedom.

We may offer guidance and make suggestions to those we love, and at the same time, we can set a good example for them. If we want them to be forgiving, caring, generous, and humble – or anything else – let us exemplify those qualities. Not easy, yet the best way of teaching!

Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement, is referred to as an ‘acharya’ because he taught through his personal example.
