Bhaktivedanta Players Celebrate 40 Years of Dramatic Devotion

This year, Manor celebrates a momentous occasion: the 40th anniversary of the Bhaktivedanta Players, one of its longest-serving departments. Drama has always been an integral part of Bhaktivedanta Manor’s services for its pilgrims. Closely intertwined with the Manor’s vibrant festivals – Janmashtami, Diwali, Gaura Purnima, Ramanavami, and many more – the Bhaktivedanta Players consistently deliver spectacular performances that entertain, educate, and captivate audiences of all ages.

The journey began with the guidance of Srila Prabhupada himself, the founder of ISKCON, who instructed the first devotees in the UK to establish a branch and emphasized the power of spiritual drama. Recognizing the UK’s rich theatrical heritage, from Shakespeare to the West End, Srila Prabhupada envisioned drama as a powerful tool for spiritual dissemination.

Following Srila Prabhupada’s instruction, the devotees wholeheartedly embraced the dramatic arts. The initial group, known as “Caitanya Instant Theatre,” faced the challenges of limited resources and manpower in the early days of ISKCON. This led to the innovative “instant theatre” approach, where rehearsals were often conducted on the day of the performance itself.

Over time, drama became an increasingly stable and significant aspect of Bhaktivedanta Manor’s activities. In 1976, the group became known as the ‘Bhaktivedanta Players’. Jaya Krishna Das, who participated in those early, exciting productions, played a pivotal role in the group’s evolution since then. In 1985, the reins were handed over to Dwarka Puri das, who oversees quality costumes and props, and Jaya Krishna Das, who continues to focus on directing and scriptwriting. That was the beginning of the Bhaktivedanta Players we recognise today.

Forty years later, we celebrate this remarkable achievement. While many have come and gone, the current structure of the Bhaktivedanta Players is the most robust it has ever been, a testament to the dedication and perseverance of countless devotees.
This year promises a series of exciting dramas and festivals. In the coming months, we will publish a series of articles highlighting the Bhaktivedanta Players’ significant milestones, including:
